Why do foreign tourists visiting Japan overlook Ofuna, which is directly connected to Narita and Haneda and is an “Ameyoko that has not been turned into a tourist spot”?(1)

Introduction
Hello. I am an Airbnb host living in a town about 50 minutes away from Tokyo by train. From my experience of hosting over 1,000 guests at my home over the past 11 years, I can say that not a single guest has ever mentioned wanting to visit Ofuna. But is Ofuna really such an unattractive place for foreign tourists visiting Japan? I don’t think so. Want to go to Tokyo? Sure! If you’re wealthy, you can enjoy gourmet food from around the world in Tokyo. There’s also the Shibuya Scramble Crossing. I don’t understand it, but for some reason, all foreign tourists seem to want to go to a ramen shop, specifically “Ichiran”. I can understand the desire to visit safe, clean, and somewhat boring tourist spots. But in my opinion, it’s not much different from going to an amusement park. When traveling abroad, don’t you want to see and experience how ordinary people live? Staying with a local through Airbnb might be a good idea. And if you want to go shopping or eat street food, I recommend experiencing it where the locals go. Worried because Japanese people don’t speak English? That can be solved by installing the Google Translate app on your smartphone.
Where is Ofuna?
Ofuna is located south of Tokyo, about a 45-minute train ride from the city. Many tourists stay in Tokyo hotels and visit Kamakura City, to which Ofuna belongs, on a day trip. Kamakura was the capital of Japan in the 12th century, so it is an old city that still has many Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. In the summer, it also attracts many tourists to its beaches. With this explanation, Ofuna (and Kamakura) might seem just like an area around Tokyo, but what should be noted is its excellent access to transportation. Ofuna is directly accessible from Tokyo’s two airports, Haneda and Narita, by train or bus without the need for transfers. I cannot understand why everyone passes through Ofuna despite its convenience.
The way to come directly to Ofuna from Narita and Haneda
- From Narita Airport, take the JR Narita Express directly to Ofuna, the final stop, in 110 minutes.

Despite the excellent transportation access from the airports, tourists do not pay attention to Ofuna. Of course, I am not saying that one should stay in Ofuna for the entire 10 days of their trip. However, considering the convenient connections to the airport, I am saying that it is definitely worth visiting Ofuna on the first or last day of a trip to Japan.
The lives of ordinary people in Japan
If you think Japanese people eat sushi every day, you are mistaken. When you go to the center of Tokyo, the streets may be filled with Ferraris and other luxury cars, but thinking that all Japanese people are wealthy is also a misunderstanding. Most Japanese people, especially now with the weak yen, visit towns like Ofuna, which are considered “commoners’ towns,” to buy food that is as inexpensive as possible with their modest salaries. Kamakura, a tourist destination just about 5 minutes by train from Ofuna, has some rather large houses tucked away in residential areas off the main streets, where you might find (not Ferraris but) 1980s Rolls-Royces parked in the garages, indicating that compared to Tokyo’s “wealthy,” those people could be considered “noble families.” This contrast is also worth noting.
How to enjoy the gourmet paradise of Ofuna
For example, on the first day after arriving in Ofuna from the airport, first head to a restaurant where you can enjoy ramen or sushi, or if you have the energy, walk around the town and sample street food. Then, at night, it’s a bit of an “adventure” to hesitantly enter a drinking establishment that can’t quite be described as a bar or an izakaya, located in an old building with not a single foreign tourist in sight. But rest assured, you will come back alive from that restaurant and you won’t be ripped off. However, I cannot guarantee that credit cards issued by foreign banks will be accepted, so it’s a good idea to have some Japanese yen in cash on hand.
(Note: In Japanese izakayas, a small dish called “otoshi” is served when you take a seat at your table. This costs a few hundred yen and cannot be canceled. Please do not make a fuss about receiving a dish you didn’t order and consider it being ripped off. Think of it as a table charge.)

そこで今回、私がお薦めしたい街が大船です。ここには少し古くて、狭くて、しかし活気のある商店街や飲食店がひしめき合っています。50年前の日本を体験してみたくなったら、ここを訪れると良いでしょう。同様の商店街には東京、上野の「アメ横」がありますが、今やアメ横は単なる観光地になってしまい、本当のローカルの雰囲気は味わえません。さあ、大船が観光地になる前に訪れましょう！今しかありません。
大船はどこにある？
大船は東京の南、東京から電車で45分ほどの場所に位置しています。多くの観光客は東京のホテルに滞在しながら、大船も属している鎌倉市を日帰りで訪れます。鎌倉は12世紀に日本の首都だったため、今でも多くの仏教寺院や神社が残る古い街です。また夏になるとビーチに来る観光客も多くいます。ここまで説明すると、大船（鎌倉も）は単なる東京の周辺地域、ということになりますが、注目すべきは交通アクセスの良さです。大船はなんと、羽田空港と成田空港という東京の2つの空港から電車やバスで、乗換なしで直接訪れることができるのです。こんなに便利な場所なのに、なぜ皆さんは大船を素通りしてしまうのか理解できません。
成田や羽田から大船へ直接来る方法
- 成田空港からJR成田エクスプレスで終点の大船まで110分。
2. 羽田空港から空港リムジンバスで70分。
このように、空港からの交通アクセスがとても良いにも関わらず観光客は大船に注目しません。私はもちろん、10日間の旅行中、ずっと大船に滞在しろ、と言っているわけではありません。しかし、この空港への接続の良さを考えれば、日本を訪れた初日、または最終日に大船を訪れる価値は十分にある、と言っているのです。
日本の庶民の暮らし
日本人は毎日寿司を食べていると思っているなら、それは誤解です。東京の中心部に行くと、道路上にはフェラーリや、高級車ばかり走っていますが、日本人は全員金持ちだと思っていたら、それも誤解です。ほとんどの日本人は少ない給料で（特に円安の今は！）少しでも安い食べ物を買うために大船のような「庶民の街」に足を運ぶのです。大船から電車で5分ほどの観光地である鎌倉は、メインストリートから少し住宅街に入ったところに随分大きな家があり、ガレージには（フェラーリではなく）80年代のロールスロイスなどが停まっているため、東京の「金持ち」たちと比べてあのような人たちは「名家」と言えるでしょう。このコントラストにも注目すべきです。
グルメ天国・大船の楽しみ方
たとえば、1日目に空港から大船に着いたら、まずはラーメンや寿司が食べられるレストランへ行く、または体力に余裕があるなら街を歩いてストリートフードを食べ歩く。そして夜は外国人観光客が一人もいない、古いビルの中にある、バーとも居酒屋とも形容できない飲み屋に恐る恐る入っていくのは、これはちょっとした「冒険」です。しかし安心してください。あなたは生きてそのレストランから帰ってこられますし、ボッタクリにも遭わないでしょう。ただし、外国の銀行が発行したクレジットカードが使えるか保証はできないので、少し日本円の現金を用意しておきましょう。
（注意。日本の居酒屋では、テーブルに付くと「お通し」という小皿料理が提供されます。これは数百円掛かり、キャンセルできません。「お通し」を出されて「頼んでもいない料理が出てきた！ボッタクリだ！」と騒がないでください。それをテーブルチャージだと思ってください）
