秋から冬へ From Autumn to Winter
20年前に私たちが住む町に数年間住んでいたというフィリピン人男性が私たちの家に泊まりに来た。翌日、私と彼は自転車に乗って、彼が当時住んでいたアパートを探すために海岸近くまで来た。彼の住んでいたというアパートは現在も存在していて、彼は私に当時の思い出を語ってくれた。
その後、私と彼は自転車に乗って海岸を走るなどサイクリングを楽しんだ。
A Filipino man who lived in the town where we live for several years 20 years ago came to stay at our house. The next day, he and I rode our bikes to the coast to look for the apartment where he lived at the time. The apartment where he lived still exists today, and he told me about his memories of those days.
After that, we enjoyed cycling along the coast.
彼は20年前、電子タイプライターだかを作っていた「国際ビジネス機械株式会社」とかいうアメリカの会社の日本法人の研究所に勤めていたのだった。それから彼は20年来、同じ会社に勤めているようだった。私は彼のことを今まで知らなかったが、同じ町に住んでいたということで、なにか古い友人に再会したような気がした。
Twenty years ago, he worked at the research laboratory of the Japanese subsidiary of an American company called “International Business Machines Corporation,” which made electronic typewriters. It seemed that he had been working at the same company for the past 20 years. I had never heard of him before, but since we lived in the same town, I felt like I was meeting an old friend again.
今年は11月まで暑かった。気温が25度を超える「夏日」もあったほどだ。11月初旬に富士山の山頂が雪で覆われないなんて、異常だ。しかし来年からはこれが「新しい正常」になるのだろう。
It was hot until November this year. There were even “summer days” where the temperature exceeded 25 degrees. It is abnormal that the summit of Mt. Fuji is not covered with snow in early November. However, this will probably become the “new normal” from next year.
この秋はヨーロッパから来たゲストが多かった。高額な航空券を購入しても、今の日本は為替レートのおかげで、旅行先として魅力的だということだろう。
This autumn, we had many guests from Europe. Even with the high airfares, Japan is probably an attractive travel destination thanks to the current exchange rate.
一方、働いて日本円を稼ぐ私たちは海外旅行へ行く余裕はない。私はこの2年間、国内も海外も旅行に出られなかった。
On the other hand, those of us who work and earn Japanese yen cannot afford to travel abroad. I have not been able to travel either domestically or internationally for the past two years.
